Hearing Aid Consultation

If you suspect that you might need a hearing aid, you will first need to have a thorough hearing test. The results from your hearing test will provide the Sonus Hearing Care Professional an outline of what sounds you may be missing or hearing.

There is a lot of information to understand when selecting a hearing aid – it can be overwhelming and confusing. Your Sonus Hearing Care Professional will guide you through each step ensuring you fully understand your options, and the next steps in owning hearing aids.

What happens during the Hearing Aid Consultation?

Your Sonus Hearing Care Professional will explain what sounds you are not hearing, and if the hearing test reveals a permanent hearing loss. If this is the case, Audiologist Ryan Hummel will recommended if a hearing aid is appropriate for one or both ears, and what hearing aid(s) can do to help with your hearing loss.

What are my options?

You will be able to see and handle different styles of hearing aids during the consultation. In some cases you may even be able to listen to a hearing aid.

Your Sonus Hearing Care Professional will help you choose the best hearing aid style, feature and level of sophistication based on your degree of hearing loss, lifestyle, and financial circumstances.

How will my hearing aid be fit so it is comfortable and works properly?

Once you have selected your hearing aids after an evaluation, the hearing professional may take impressions of your ears if you selected custom hearing aids or behind-the-ear hearing aids that require earmolds.

Typically, hearing aids must be ordered from a manufacturer and then programmed by your hearing professional to meet your specific hearing needs. This process can take a few weeks, so do not be disappointed when you do not receive your hearing aids the same day as your evaluation.

What happens when my hearing aids arrive?

When your hearing aids arrive at our office, our Audiologist will program them based on your hearing test prescription.

One of the more advanced technologies available to ensure your hearing aids are programmed properly is Live Speech Mapping. This new method uses speech as a stimulus to help the Audiologist adjust hearing aids to the right settings for each wearer. Live Speech Mapping makes fitting appointments more interactive and can reduce the number of office visits required for successful hearing aid programming.

Your Sonus Hearing Care Professional will explain how to use the devices, how to put them in the ear and how to remove them, how to change batteries and how to care for and clean the devices.

When you put the hearing aids in your ear for the first time, you may have different emotions about the sounds you hear. This is normal and to be expected. Small changes can be made to the hearing aids at your first fitting if there are things that you feel should be adjusted right away.

It is a good idea to bring family members or close friends to the hearing aid fitting so they can help remember all the information that is given and be a support to you.

Your hearing aid fitting is only a starting place; other changes to customize the hearing to your liking may need to take place over a few appointments, as you wear the hearing aids in more situations and adapt to all the new sounds you are hearing.
